Dolly was a clone of the sheep who ______.
Adv.
Dolly was a clone of the sheep, which had no second parent, who had an exact copy of the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) of the donor sheep in its nucleus.
Dolly was the first mammal to be cloned from another adult mammal. Dolly was created through reproductive cloning technique. A cell was isolated from the udder of white sheep and allowed to multiply in vitro.
Simultaneously, an egg cell was isolated from a black-faced sheep. The nucleus of the egg cell was removed with the help of a micropipette. The cell, isolated from white sheep, which was allowed to multiply, divided into numerous daughter cells.
A single perfect udder cell was selected and was called ‘donor cell.’ The donor cell has its nucleus intact. The egg cell did not have nucleus, but had proteins, which were needed for embryonic development.
The donor cell and the egg cell were kept side by side and electric shock was applied to the egg cell. The shock triggered the fusion of egg cell with the donor cell. The DNA of the donor cell got reprogrammed and initiated the development of embryo. The egg cell already had all the proteins needed for embryo development. So, after a period of incubation, the embryo was implanted into a surrogate mother sheep.
